The museum is housed in one of the most important buildings of Verona, built in the 16th century by the architect Michele Sanmicheli for a wealthy Veronese family. It later became the site of exhibitions, scientific and art collections in the 19th century, thanks to Alessandro Pompei, who donated it to the Municipality of Verona.
The Second World War severely damaged the Palace, burying the rooms in piles of rubble. The reconstruction work lasted until 1948 and the building was reopened to the public in 1952.
The museum houses numerous natural history objects, offering visitors the opportunity to get close to them.
