The Reggia di Venaria or Venaria Reale was built in the mid-17th century as a hunting lodge for the royal family of Savoy and included the palace, the hunting woods, a hamlet and the beautiful park full of fountains, terraces and spectacular staircases. The complex was later enlarged by the architect Filippo Juvarra, who added the Galleria Grande, the Citroneria, the Scuderia and the Chapel of San Huberto, making the Reggia one of the masterpieces of the Baroque period.
After Napoleon's arrival, the Reggia became a barracks, the gardens were replaced by a parade ground, and horses and cannons took the place of flowerbeds and fountains. The complex remained a military garrison for a long time, until the Second World War, before being abandoned.
In the early 2000s, a major restoration project restored this wonderful palace to its splendour, and today this beautiful building is often the venue for exhibitions, shows, concerts and conferences.
