The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is also known as the Basilica Liberiana and owes its name to Pope Liberius, who had it built in the 4th century AD after a dream in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him. During the dream, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin suggested the construction of a basilica on the site where a miracle would be performed. On August 5th of that year, an untimely snowfall blanketed the Esquiline Hill, so Pope Liberius decided to have the basilica erected there.
During the visit, your specialised guide will show you the Basilica with its Loggia delle Benedizioni, the Hall of the Popes, the Liberian Museum and the Staircase of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
