This magnificent work is in its original location, the wall of the ancient hall of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.
This is a painting, 460 cm high and 880 cm wide, executed in oil tempera on plaster, an innovative technique compared to the fresco technique used at the time. For the creation of this mural painting, Leonardo carried out an in-depth study and made several sketches.
The work has suffered unfortunate vicissitudes over the centuries; as it was painted on plaster, the paint began to peel almost from the very beginning. Several attempts at restoration were made between the 18th and 19th centuries, which unfortunately failed. During the French occupation, Napoleon's troops used the wall for target practice, and in 1943 bombing raids destroyed the ceiling of the room, leaving the work exposed to the elements for many years.
After careful and intensive restoration, Leonardo's Last Supper has been restored to some of its original splendour and can now be appreciated by those lucky tourists who manage to book their visit well in advance.
